TravelZoo teamed up with Canon this summer and offered a #capturebritishsummer competition 2018. Entrants had to submit a photo that captures Britain in summertime to which I was chosen as the overall winner!
After being encouraged by my Mother-in-law into entering, I settled on my picture of Happisburgh Lighthouse, a place myself and hundreds of people have photographed many times. I was there at the right time, with the light and especially before the crops had been harvested. These created the perfect lead-in lines in the form of an S curve coupled with the way the clouds are formed almost pointing at the lighthouse drawing you to the main subject.I entered not thinking anything would come from it.
The weeks passed and I forgot all about the competition until I checked my emails. I was surprised when I received the confirmation saying that I was the winner.
Here's what the judge had to say.....
“A superb image which with the evocative location, dramatic lighting and strong composition captures the essence of a British summer’s evening. The lead in lines through the crop field take the viewer into the picture to the lighthouse, where the swirls of cloud in the twilight sky also seem to radiate from. The composition is bold, simple and striking. I particularly like the way the photographer has had the courage to let the sky inhabit over half the image area; an unconventional approach which in this case works so well. The image is also technically perfect; sharp and crisp, with an excellent range of tones, and a subtle use of colour.”
